No structural work is involved, and the closet is usually back in use the same day. If you plan to repaint the closet interior, the window between removal and installation is the easiest time to do it.
It depends on the opening you already have, not on what you would like to have. A well-designed reach-in with double hanging, drawers and full-height shelving often holds more than a poorly fitted-out walk-in, because nothing is lost to walkway. If you have a walk-in already, the upgrade is about using its walls properly. If you have a reach-in, converting it is rarely necessary to solve the storage problem.
